Matthew. Age 11.
When Matthew sat in front of our cameras, I noticed he had an unusual scar by his ear. I’m always interested in scars because they typically carry a story, often life shaping. Matthew’s is no different and with the gracious permission of his mom, I’m honoured to share Matthew’s story here with you:
“Matthew’s scar is from a surgery gone wrong, but the main story is how God truly protected him and healed him. He was born with a skin tag, which is extra skin. Initially, the doctors thought the skin tag was an indicator of something amiss internally, but thankfully it turned out to be only extra skin. At 9 months old the plastic surgeon said that Matthew would be cleared for surgery to remove it. And so we saw our small 9 month old being rolled away on a stretcher, which is probably one of the most difficult things a parent can ever see.
After surgery everything seemed to be going well. However, on day 2 of recovery, Matthew had a high fever and puss was coming out of the incision. Long story short, the incision split open rendering a huge open wound on his little face. He was on medication and we had to keep cleaning it during the day. It took about 6 weeks to heal but I know that God truly protected him from it spiralling out of control. The scar should have only been a fine line but as you can see, it’s much wider. I have recently asked Matthew if he wants to have surgery again to remove the scar, but he said no because it reminds him and shows the world of God’s faithfulness and protection over him. I love that, and that’s what I am reminded of as well whenever I catch a glimpse of his scar. God is faithful and He protects.” – Delisa, Matthew’s mom
